Women’s volleyball was my third sports competition of the day and it was filled with the most drama.  Santa Monica College, hosting Citrus College in women’s volleyball, quickly took a 2-0 set lead.  The third set, a test of wills for both teams, ended with Citrus scoring the last two points to win 31-29.  The momentum swing Citrus was riding continued into the fourth set resulting in a fifth and final set.  SMC jumped out first and Citrus could never pull even.  SMC won the final set 15-11.  SMC defeated Citrus by scores of 26-24, 25-16, 29-31, 20-25, 15-11.

Mariko Coverdale, Assistant Coach of Santa Monica College, said after the game, “We really needed that win.” Coverdale continued, “[It's] given us a confidence boost. The last couple of matches we haven’t been the most confident so I think we really needed that, especially in the fifth set.  It’s awesome for the girls and a good push to start the second half of the season.”

Allan Hancock at Santa Monica College – Women’s Soccer

The Santa Monica College Corsair women’s soccer team winless on the season hosted Allan Hancock College from northern Santa Barbara County on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Corsair Field in Santa Monica, Calif.  The first half yielded no goals for either team.  In the 55 minute SMC scored the first of four goals on the day.  The game finished 4-1 leaving SMC no longer winless on the season.  SMC improved their season record to 1-5-1.

Behind the camera: Photographing soccer games has been a recent addition to my lineup.  I have covered three games and two practices.  On my first time out I photographed players at peak action alone in the frame. Peak action can be hard to come by and players framed alone does not show a great deal of interaction between players and the game.  Now I am working on capturing multiple players in the frame interacting with one other.  Furthermore, soccer is a sport where the reaction of players is crucial.  I now always look to capture the player/team’s reaction to a play or goal.

Santa Monica College at Santa Ana College – JUCO Football

This past weekend I traveled on the Santa Monica College team bus to cover their game against the Santa Ana Dons in Santa Ana, California.  This was my first team bus ride since my football playing days when I was in eighth grade.  The highlight was on the trip home when the bus driver pulled over at McDonald’s allowing the players to grab something to eat.  80 players and a cheer squad filling up a McDonald’s was a sight to see.  Clearly, I was not expecting this iconic moment because my camera was under the bus.  Lesson has been learned.

Game Report: Santa Monica jumped out to an early lead but was unable to hold on.  A tied score at 14-14 mid-way through the second quarter was the closest SMC would get.  The Dons scored the next 36 points to put away the Corsairs.  SMC lost 27-53.

West LA @ Santa Monica College Basketball

Wednesday night West LA College meet up with a hot Santa Monica College team.  Both Men’s and Women’s basketball were coming off victories in their last game.  The streak continued for both teams as SMC walked off the court with victories.  The Men dominated from the opening second of the game.  They had a double digit lead within minutes and West LA could never make the game close.  The final score was 107 – 64 SMC.  The unfortunate part of scoring 100 points the fans don’t get free tacos!

The Women’s team came out slow and was down 13 points mid-way through the second half.  They flipped a switch and started to convert possessions into points.  The 13 point deficit turned into a tied game with 4 minutes remaining and by the end of the game SMC had 68-55 victory.

This game was a tale of two halves plus overtime.  SMC came out in a flurry in the first half but sizzled in the last ten minutes going into the locker room trailing ten points.  The second half SMC fought back from the ten point deficit to take the lead with seconds remaining in the game.  Citrus tied the game back up.  Two silly fouls on SMC gave Citrus two chances to win the game on free throws but Citrus was not able to convert on the front end of both one-in-one opportunities.   The game went into overtime and SMC dominated in the period.

SMC was lead by #2 Lee Lark with 21 points and #10 Everett Brown with 20 points.  A.J. Harris, Matt Sinclair and Deshawn Stephens all score in double digits.
