Walk-off to the second round of playoffs

Bike to Work Day

Cyclists make a turn onto 2nd street during Bike to Work Day part of Bike Week initiative on Thursday, May 16, 2013 in Santa Monica, Calif.  Throughout Los Angeles and Santa Monica numerous pit stops popped up to promote the event and the week.  The pit stop in front of city hall of Santa Monica passed out boxes filled with red blinking lights, reflective stickers and fruit.  In addition, Metro, Big Blue Bus and others are offering free rides to passengers with bicycles for the day.   Happy commuting!

Jonathan Cherry poses with his bike inside his office.  Cherry has an eight mile round trip commute from home to work each day.  Each leg takes roughly 20 minutes to complete.

LAPD’s Gun Buyback

After three hours of the six hour event the LAPD collected 833 weapons, 31 of them being assault weapons.



 

LAPD Chief of Police Charlie Beck (right) holds up illegal magazine clips during a press conference.  The buyback program offers Ralph’s $100 or $200 gift cards depending on the type of weapon handed in.  The Gun Buyback program started in 2009 by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Standing to the left of Chief Beck is Guillermo Cespedes, Deputy Mayor overseeing the Gang Reduction and Youth Development programs.
