Last Drive – Santa Monica vs Glendale

The Santa Monica College Corsairs made the necessary plays on the last two drives in the American Pacific Conference game against the Glendale College Vaqueros at Glendale College on Saturday, November 5, 2011.  The Corsairs, with 1:52 left on the clock, drove 80 yards in 1:39 for a touchdown and a 47-41 lead, leaving only 13 seconds left on the clock for the Vaqueros.  During the scoring drive, the Corsairs faced a fourth and one at their 45 yard line.  Head coach Gifford Lindheim called back-to-back timeouts to buy extra time for making the decision.  Lindheim huddled his team around the sideline and asked them what they wanted to do.  The players, in a rare display of unanimity, decided to go for it on fourth and one.  On the next play, quarterback Alfonso Medina ran a quarterback sneak to the right of center and picked up the first down.  Five plays later, Medina hooked up with wide receiver Brandon Taylor for a 23-yard touchdown catch.

With the ball in the hands of Glendale quarterback Kevin Hunter on the Glendale 20 yard line, with the clock almost at zero, it was his turn to drive his team for a touchdown.  Clinton Perry intercepted Hunter and sealed the deal for the Corsairs victory.

The victory improves the Corsair record to 5-0 in conference and 7-2 overall.  SMC and rival West LA, both undefeated, will square off on the field for the conference championship next Saturday, November 12 at Corsair Field.  Winner gets the ring.

Glendale Community College vs LA Southwest College 11.13.10 Football

Glendale Community College coming into their last game of the season winless at 0-9 took on the Cougars of LA Southwest College.  The game was close throughout the first 45 minutes of the game.  Entering the fourth quarter Glendale had the narrowness lead of one point.  In the past this is where Glendale would fall apart and let the lead slip away.  This time was different.  Glendale tacked on 14 more points to win 42 to 27 and celebrated their only victory of the year like they just won the league championship.  The gentleman on the team played with a lot heart in the last quarter to ensure the victory.

In the post game speech, Coach John Rome of Glendale gave his team an emotional send off and told them how proud of them he is.  The embraces of teammates and coaches spoke volumes how the teams effort and camaraderie .  Lets see if the victory starts a winless streak as long as their losing streak was.  We will have to wait till next season to find out.

Santa Monica College vs Glendale Community College 11.6.10

Santa Monica trailing by 7 -14 going into the 3rd quarter turned this around with a punt return Deshawn Stewart.  Santa Monica scored two more touchdowns to take a 28 to 14 lead.  The 28 points were enough to hold off a winless Glendale team, 28 to 21.

The game had so many pentalies the referees had to ice their arms after throwing their flags so many times.  One player from each side got ejected from the game including starting quarterback James Cammack for SMC.  SMC had to bring in their third string quarterback, linebacker Jonathan McNeal to manage the rest of the game late in the second half.

Glendale College vs West LA College Football 10/23/10

I traveled to West LA College in Culver City to photograph the game between Glendale Community College Vaqueros and West Los Angeles College Wildcats.  I originally went to the game because my good family friend plays for the Glendale team.  I have been on the sidelines photographing his games before.  Saturday was my first opportunity to photograph his game this year.

West LA’s field has no lights and to accommodate the game they start at 1:00pm.  This was my first day game of the season which allowed me to shoot at 100ISO and still achieve shutter speeds 1/500 and higher.  Under night game conditions I am at 1600ISO or higher to stop the action.  Its close to a given rule to freeze motion set your camera’s shutter speed to 1/500 or higher).  Remember your exposure needs to correct changing the aperture and ISO can play a factor in achieving the correct exposure.

I had to do something I HATE to do during any sporting event, leave the game before its over.  I had a prior commitment to ensure I be there on time (factoring in LA traffic) I had to leave at the end of the third quarter.  I don’t reget my decision, but the game finished with West LA kicking a last second field goal to win the game.  West LA wins 26-24.
