My friend Salvo’s cousin is the head football coach at Santa Monica College, where I also happen to attend photo classes. With Salvo’s help I was granted a field pass for their game on Saturday against East LA College. I have shot high school football, but never a junior college game, so I was looking forward to the opportunity to photography football at a higher level. Furthermore, this was my first time using the Canon 7D for football. The 7D is a beast and so worth it, as I am extremely happy with the results. It’s light years better than the Canon 20D I previously used to shoot sports with.
This game was close throughout. The first score did not occur until the 3rd quarter when SMC connected deep into East LA’s territory. East LA answered with a field goal of their own on the next drive. With under two minutes remaining in the game and looking like the game was headed to overtime; SMC stopped East LA from converting a first down to run out the clock. Fourth and long from their own three yard East LA was in a must punt situation. Number 49 for SMC came up big and blocked the punt and SMC recovered on their three yard line. This set up a last second field goal attempt with two seconds left on the clock. The several hundred fans erupted when the winning kick went through the uprights.
A slow game got real intense with a dramatic finish.
The photos below are from the block punt and the winning field goal.
