The Santa Monica College Corsairs made the necessary plays on the last two drives in the American Pacific Conference game against the Glendale College Vaqueros at Glendale College on Saturday, November 5, 2011. The Corsairs, with 1:52 left on the clock, drove 80 yards in 1:39 for a touchdown and a 47-41 lead, leaving only 13 seconds left on the clock for the Vaqueros. During the scoring drive, the Corsairs faced a fourth and one at their 45 yard line. Head coach Gifford Lindheim called back-to-back timeouts to buy extra time for making the decision. Lindheim huddled his team around the sideline and asked them what they wanted to do. The players, in a rare display of unanimity, decided to go for it on fourth and one. On the next play, quarterback Alfonso Medina ran a quarterback sneak to the right of center and picked up the first down. Five plays later, Medina hooked up with wide receiver Brandon Taylor for a 23-yard touchdown catch.
With the ball in the hands of Glendale quarterback Kevin Hunter on the Glendale 20 yard line, with the clock almost at zero, it was his turn to drive his team for a touchdown. Clinton Perry intercepted Hunter and sealed the deal for the Corsairs victory.
The victory improves the Corsair record to 5-0 in conference and 7-2 overall. SMC and rival West LA, both undefeated, will square off on the field for the conference championship next Saturday, November 12 at Corsair Field.
