Rainy Running of the 26th LA Marathon March 2011

Today started grey with no rain and about when the masses hit mile 3 the sky opened up and it started to pour. The rain never stopped and for the most part did not put a damper on the spirits of the runners or the family members coming out to root them on.
Over 25,000 runners took part in the 26th running of the LA Marathon on Sunday, March 20th 2011.
Runners run past orange peels passed out by spectators in front of the Pantages Theater on Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood.
The runners embraced the rain along the whole 26.2 mile course.

LA Marathon – The Runners Part 2

I spent the first few hours taking pictures downtown. I then spent some time on Hollywood Blvd. and in the middle of the day I made the trek to Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica to witness the runners cross the finish line. It was no easy task getting to Santa Monica. The traffic was a nightmare and parking was even worse. I parked 15 blocks away and walked to the finish line. No complaints about the distance because walking 15 blocks is nothing compared to running 26.2 miles. I found a spot about a quarter of mile from the finish line. This vantage point gave me a clear view of the runners and allowed me to snap pictures of their emotional finish.
My friend Kevin, who ran his first marathon, described the last mile as being filled with thousands of spectators cheering on the runners and motivating them to push forward through their pain. He teared up when his brother joined him on the course for the last stretch of mile 25. This final encouragement is what he needed to cross the finish line. Kevin reached his goal and left nothing on the course.

The LA Marathon is one of my favorite things about Los Angeles. Each year I look forward to race day, as the marathon brings out the best in the city. The 26.2 mile trek winds through a multitude of neighborhoods showcasing the best of that part of the city. Community members line the street cheering on complete strangers, passing on their good wishes and support. Even thorough traffic is worse on a race day, it’s worth it. The Marathon brings the city closer together for the day. It’s a proud day to be a member of this LARGE city.
Over the next week, I will be sharing photos taken from the LA Marathon. 26,000 people laced up their shoes and participated in the 26.2 mile race. Starting at historic Dodger Stadium, they weaved through landmarks of Los Angeles and ended up at the Santa Monica Pier.
The first three photos are an overview of race day. I found myself on a bridge looking down on the runners. Being on the bridge allowed me to complete a goal I set for myself for the day to find unique angles to capture the runners. The bird’s eye view is a unique perspective. Ultimately, I wish I could have been higher up to capture more of a bird’s eye view. In addition, I wanted to showcase the massive amount of runners in the marathon.
