I flew into Pittsburgh Pennsylvania on September 24, 2009 to visit family. Little did I know I was going to be a part of a massive rally against the world leaders. Police officers with big guns in riot gear and loud groups of chanting people filled Pittsburgh throughout the week of the G20 Summit.
The morning of Friday, September 25th, I loaded up my backpack with my camera gear and grabbed a fist full of quarters for the bus. My worried sister constantly reminded me to be safe. Thanks sis!
I was unsure of what was in store for me. Getting off the bus, all I could see were hundreds of police officers in riot gear lined along the street and protesters filling up the sidewalk with banners and flags. Activists outnumbered the police presence 10 to 1. There were countless spectators.
Camera on my hip, I started snapping away. Throughout the next 5 hours, I tried to capture the many faces of people participating in the rally. The most memorable moment was walking through a neighborhood and seeing people come out of their homes to cheer on the demonstrators. They reveled in the moment.
The rally was extremely peaceful. The activists consisted of people from different races, religions, beliefs and sexual preferences. It was difficult to discern everyone’s motivation for taking part in the rally. No two groups were “fighting” for the same cause.
