Pier Walking

Photos from a brief walk on the Santa Monica Pier with my new camera.  I picked up an used Canon 1D Mark III last week.  Love the camera so far.  One of the biggest difference between the new beauty and my old 7D is crop factor.  The 1D has a 1.3x crop vs 1.6x crop.  I love have the “extra” frame.

“Play Me, I’m Yours” Pianos in the City

Jennifer Woodard of Bakersfield plays a piano associated with the “Play Me, I’m Yours” art installation at the Santa Monica Pier on Sunday, March 22, 2012 in Los Angeles. British artist Luke Jerram fostered the idea of having pianos in public spaces for the public to play in hoping to create dialogue about urban space.  It also happened to be her birthday, she turned 29.

Party at the Pier – Wisconsin Style

Wisconsin Badger fans invaded Santa Monica for the Party at the Pier (pep rally) on Saturday, December 31, 2011.  Badger fans traveled to Southern California for the Rose Bowl game against the University of Oregon on Monday, January 2, 2012.  A sea of red-and-white enthusiasts filled the pier. Young and old were entertained by music from the University of Wisconsin marching band, performances by the dance and cheer squads, video highlights from the season, and interviews with UW  ”greats”: Barry Alvarez (Athletic Director and former football coach), Ron Dayne, and Mark Tauscher.  Midway through the rally, the players took the stage while throwing autographed mini footballs to the crowd.   Matt LePay interviewed the team captains as well as junior running back Montee Ball, who paused before speaking as echoes of  ”One more year!” filled the air. (Ball was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy award and must decide by the end of the season whether or not to turn pro.) The rally concluded with the band playing Varsity.

Santa Monica Beach

My Sunday night trip the beach included a camera a few lenses and a sturdy tripod.  My goal for my night shoot was to capture the ferris wheel on the Santa Monica Pier with pedestrians in the foreground while keeping all my subjects not looking like ants.  I was not getting the results I have intended, so I decided to change my strategy.  My new plan was to shoot the upper portion of the ferris wheel while leaving most of the frame open with sky.

Los Angeles or Wisconsin

I have lived in Los Angeles 3 months shy of 4 years.  Always knowing it was possible for the Wisconsin Badgers to play in the Rose Bowl has always been dream of mine for them to come out to LA.  Living in SoCal I did not need to pay for airfare or hotel just a game ticket.  The Wisconsin Badgers played amazingly during the season and earned a invitation to the Rose Bowl and play TCU (Texas Christian University) on January 1st, 2011.  TCU played a great game and defeated the Badgers 21 to 19.

Wisconsin fans are one of the best traveling fans in the country.  They flocked to Los Angeles and covered LA in Badger Red.   My aunt, uncle and cousin came out for the game and I was fortunate  to be able to see them and hang out.  It made me feel like I was back in Wisconsin for a few days, almost I still was able to wear shorts!

The pictures below demonstrate the home away from home feel in Los Angeles.
